The purpose of this project is to explore the concept of heat transfer as it relates to the construction of heat pipes. The objective is to build two heat pipe and compare their performance. One heat pipe will be a straight conventional heat pipe. It will have a heat source and a heat sink end and will be oriented in a slantwise fashion so that gravity will help the fluid that condenses at the top of the pipe travel back down where it is to be evaporated once more. The second heat pipe will be an unusual coil-shaped pipe made out of a flexible copper tubing. The heat source end will consist of a coil of several loops. The heat sink end will consist of one or more segments which extend of the outside end of the coil and vertically upwards. Water will be used initially as the fluid, but different fluids may be tried eventually as well. The goal will be to get both heat pipes to transfer heat.
